Samuel Jaffe presented a talk entitled “The Whole Story: a celebration of caterpillars in all their incarnations”. Sam is the founder and director of the Caterpillar Lab, a nonprofit based in NH and dedicated to educational outreach through programs using live caterpillars, photography and videos. Sam presented a “Whole Story” perspective of natural history: exploring the life cycle of New England caterpillars and their associated organisms including host plants, parasitoids and hyperparasitoids. He has produced videos documenting caterpillars shedding their skins, leaf mining caterpillars eating paths through leaf tissue, and a variety of parasitoids that utilize caterpillars as hosts in a variety of ways. He supplemented his talk with live specimens, including cryptic geometrid caterpillars arranging themselves on twigs. For those wishing to find their own caterpillars, he suggests obtain ing a UV flashlight because many caterpillars will glow green.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 pm for discussion and refreshments.

Respectfully submitted, Andrea Golden, CEC Secretary
