Bruno de Medeiros, CEC president and graduate student in Brian Ferrell’s lab, gave the traditional President’s address to the club, entitled Weevil Diversity: Beyond the 60,000 Names. Bruno acknowledged some links to his earlier studies in Brazil, starting with former CEC President Hans Reichardt and Sergio Vanin at the U. of Sao Paolo. Bruno’s recent work has focused on the Anchylorhnchus genus of weevils. He has mastered the art of climbing palm trees in order to collect weevils from the trees’ inflorescences. Among the behaviors he has witnessed is larval cannibalism, enabled by substantial jaws found in some early-stage weevil larva.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 for discussion and refreshments.
Respectfully submitted,
Andrea Golden, CEC Secretary
