Samuel Jaffe, local photographer and naturalist, presented a talk entitled Life on the Leaf Edge.
Sam discussed his work raising and photographing many of New England’s most charismatic caterpillars. His most recent effort is incorporating caterpillars into educational programs across New England in the hope of fostering a new generation of naturalists. In the past five years, he has developed caterpillar exhibits, walks, talks, and most recently, the Caterpillar Lab.
Because caterpillars have simple concerns, to optimize feeding and avoid predation, and because they lack the complications that come with adaptations for reproductive viability, they can provide simple and often vivid examples of camouflage and feeding strategies.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:35 for discussion and refreshments.
Respectfully submitted,
Andrea Golden, CEC Secretary
