Meeting 1144 Minutes
Minutes from the 1144th Meeting of the Cambridge Entomological Club
President Patrick Gorring called the 1144th meeting of the Cambridge Entomological Club to order at 7:45 pm on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 in MCZ 101. Approximately 31 members and guests were in attendance.
Old business: Jack Boyle was confirmed for membership.
John Himmelman, author/illustrator of Cricket Radio: Tuning in the night-singing insects and Guide to Night-singing Insects of the Northeast presented a talk entitled Singing Leaves: The Stories & Songs of the Crickets & Katydids.
For his field guide to crickets & katydids, Mr. Himmelman reviewed and cross referenced the existing literature going back to the 19th century, including a work by a founding member of the Ent Club, Samuel Scudder. Himmelman’s ultimate goal was to see and record all of the 70+ species included in his book, Guide to Night-singing Insects of the Northeast. His overview included field crickets, tree crickets, bush crickets, angle winged katydids, round headed katydids and cone headed katydids, among others. He illustrated his talk with photographs and recordings from his fieldwork for the book and shared a few stories of his travels in the northeast.
Copies of Mr. Himmelman’s books were available for purchase after the meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 for discussion and refreshments, and book signing.
Respectfully submitted,
Andrea Golden, CEC Secretary
