Dr. Jonathan Pruitt Assistant Professor at University of California, Santa Barbara, gave an energetic talk entitled “From individuals, to populations, to communities, to extinction: when does personality matter?”

Individual differences in behavior (aka ‘animal personality’) have received considerable attention in recent years because of their apparent ability to explain maladaptive behavior and to predict individual fitness in a variety of circumstances. Using the social spider Anelosimas studiosus as an example, Dr. Pruitt explored how behavioral variation, in this case docile and aggeressive members of the colony, influence higher level ecological processes, including population demographics, species interactions and multilevel selection.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45pm for discussion and refreshments.

Respectfully submitted,

Andrea Golden, CEC Secretary
