Professor William Leach of Columbia presented a talk based on his recent book, “Butterfly People” about butterflies and natural history in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Prof. Leach discussed the character of natural history in America between 1865 and 1900 and the way men such as William Henry Edwards, Samuel Scudder (former CEC president), Herman Strecker, Augustus Radcliffe Grote, and William Doherty transformed and enriched it. During the same period, America was transformed from a primarily agrarian society into an industrial power, as exemplified by the 1893 World’s Fair. Professor Leach detailed how these changes impacted these men and the natural world they studied.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 for discussion and refreshments.

Respectfully submitted,
Andrea Golden, CEC Secretary
